Removals from Kent to Spain

The Costa retirement classic. Decades of holidays in the same villa, then the move that follows. Plus an urban professional stream into Madrid and Barcelona that wasn't there ten years ago.

Most Kent-to-Spain moves are a story decades in the making. The villa in Mijas was bought in the nineties; the family visited every August; the children grew up; retirement came round. Then the move from Tunbridge Wells, Sevenoaks, or Tonbridge follows the route the family already knows. We unload at an address the customer can find blindfolded. Costa del Sol, Costa Blanca, Costa de la Luz — and now increasingly the inland Andalusian villages where the prices haven't yet caught up to the coast.

The newer stream is professional and urban. Madrid and Barcelona pull tech, finance, and creative-sector talent who came to London in their twenties and are heading to Spain in their thirties for the climate, the cost, and the change of pace. From Maidstone, Ashford, and the Medway towns, the move profile is younger, the lorry size smaller, the household contents lighter — a flat's worth rather than a four-bedroom house. The lorry routing is the same; the consolidation pattern is different.

Customs is straightforward. Spain is inside the EU customs union and the empadronamiento at the destination ayuntamiento is a routine residency registration. Transfer-of-residence relief applies for genuine relocations and the standard six-month possession rule covers most household moves. The road route runs Eurotunnel or Dover ferry, then the French motorway network through to the Spanish border at Irún or La Jonquera depending on whether you're heading west to Galicia/Madrid or east to Catalonia/Valencia. Kent angles

What we see
on this route from Kent.

  • Tunbridge Wells / Sevenoaks established retirees — Costa villas owned for decades, the move that follows.
  • Maidstone / Ashford urban professionals — Madrid and Barcelona moves; smaller loads, faster turnaround.
  • Andalusian inland villages (Granada province, Almería province) — newer pattern as coastal prices climb.
  • Mallorca and Tenerife — second-home flips, Canterbury and Margate retirement profile.

Cities & regions

6 listed

Costa del Sol

Marbella, Mijas, Estepona, Fuengirola, Torremolinos. Established expat infrastructure. Routine deliveries; access generally good. The volume anchor for Kent-to-Spain.

Costa Blanca

Alicante, Denia, Jávea, Torrevieja. Lighter expat density than Costa del Sol but the same retirement-driven profile. Mostly Tunbridge Wells / Sevenoaks moves; Tonbridge and Ashford less so.

Andalusian inland

Granada, Seville, Córdoba, Ronda, the Alpujarra villages. Lifestyle-driven, often second-home conversions. Older property stock; rural-lane access requires care.

Madrid

Urban professional inflow. Apartment-block deliveries; lift access is the typical variable. Smaller load profiles than the Costa coast.

Barcelona

Tech and creative sector. Eixample apartment access often needs the smaller transfer vehicle for the final mile. Family relocations alongside the singles-and-couples professional moves.

Balearics (Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza)

Second-home flips and retirement moves. Adds a Barcelona / Valencia onward sea leg. The Mallorca route runs frequently enough to be routine; Ibiza and Menorca quoted on request.

Customs path

End to end.
No surprises at the border.

Spain is inside the EU customs union. We file the UK export declaration before departure and the Spanish import declaration at the entry point (typically Irún for west-bound moves, La Jonquera for east-bound). Transfer-of-residence relief is filed against your empadronamiento at the destination ayuntamiento. The standard six-month possession rule applies. You provide passport, empadronamiento confirmation, and a signed inventory. NIE (Spanish tax-residency number) is not required for the customs filing but is needed for buying or renting property and obtaining utilities at the destination.

Pre-survey checklist

Three things
to flag at survey.

  1. No.01 Whether you have a Spanish residency document already (TIE — Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) or are arriving on a non-lucrative visa or work visa — the empadronamiento timing differs and the customs paperwork closes accordingly.
  2. No.02 Whether your destination is a coastal urbanización (purpose-built complex with predictable access) or an Andalusian village (narrow streets, smaller transfer vehicle) — the final-mile detail goes in the quote.
  3. No.03 Whether the move is a full house (Costa retirement profile) or a flat (Madrid/Barcelona urban professional profile) — the consolidation calendar and lorry size differ; partial-load moves sometimes consolidate with another Spain-bound load to keep the cost realistic.

Route-specific FAQ

Asked and
answered.

The most-asked questions for the Kent-to-Spain route specifically. Cross-route questions live in the general FAQ on the dedicated FAQ page.

Costa del Sol urbanización vs. Andalusian village — what changes?
Access mostly. Costa del Sol urbanizaciónes are purpose-built and the access roads carry construction traffic without issue — full-size lorries reach the door. Inland Andalusian villages have heritage-restricted streets, white-painted lanes too narrow for a UK removals lorry, and parking that doesn't exist. We handle those with a smaller transfer vehicle for the final mile, built into the quote as a separate line so you see the cost breakdown.
Can you handle the Balearic islands?
Yes. Mallorca and Menorca routinely; Ibiza on request. The route runs Kent → French motorway → Barcelona or Valencia, then a sea leg on the Trasmediterránea ferry to the destination island. The sea leg adds time and cost but the customs is internal-Spanish (not a separate declaration). Quotes for the Balearics include the ferry leg cleanly.
Do you handle the Canary Islands?
No. The Canaries are outside the EU customs union (special tax territory) and the routing is air freight or specialist Atlantic shipping rather than UK road haulage. We refer Tenerife / Gran Canaria moves to a specialist Atlantic shipper.
Is the Bromley sister site relevant for Spain?
Yes — bromleyremovals.uk is our specialist for the BR-postcode catchment and Spain is one of its dedicated routes. Same operation underneath; the brief there reads as Bromley-borough-specific. If you're moving from a Bromley address and want the borough-level framing, that's where to look.
