Removals from Kent to Italy

Slower than Spain. Higher engagement. Tuscany farmhouses, Lake Como apartments, Le Marche villages, Puglia masserie. Plus the Milan and Rome professional channels.

Italy is a slower-burning customer journey than Spain. Where the Costa move is a story decades in the making, the Tuscany or Le Marche move is a story years in the making — the customer has been visiting, considering, restoring something, calling it "the project" for a while before the move actually books. The lorry shows up in Tunbridge Wells or Sevenoaks for a household that has been mentally living between two countries for a while. The move is usually the final step rather than the start of a new chapter.

The destination set is genuinely regional. Tuscany dominates by name recognition (Florence, Lucca, Siena, the Chianti hills) but Le Marche, Puglia, Umbria, and Liguria all carry consistent Kent-to-Italy demand. The lakes — Como, Garda, Maggiore — are their own thing again, with a higher proportion of apartment-block destinations and a routinely-delivered lorry profile. Milan and Rome are the professional anchors: Milan for fashion-industry transfers and the broader Lombardy finance/manufacturing belt; Rome for diplomatic, academic, and cultural-sector moves.

The Italian customs path runs through the EU customs union. We file the UK export declaration before departure and the Italian import declaration at the entry port — typically Ventimiglia for west-coast destinations or via Switzerland and the Brenner Pass for the lakes and the Alpine fringe. The Italian residenza at the comune is the residency anchor for the customs relief filing. For Bromley-borough-specific pickups, our sister site bromleyremovals.uk goes deeper on the Italy route as part of its dedicated five-country brief.

Kent angles

What we see
on this route from Kent.

  • Sevenoaks / Tunbridge Wells lifestyle moves — Tuscany farmhouses, Le Marche villages, slow-renovation projects.
  • Lakeside (Como, Garda, Maggiore) apartment-block moves — Maidstone and Tonbridge professional retirement.
  • Milan and Rome professional channels — fashion industry, diplomatic, academic. Smaller load profiles.
  • Puglia masserie restoration — newer pattern, Canterbury and Margate creative-sector retirees.

Cities & regions

Destinations in Italy.

6 listed

Tuscany

Florence, Lucca, Siena, the Chianti and Val d'Orcia hill villages. The volume anchor. Restoration-property moves are common; older buildings with narrow stair access often need a smaller transfer vehicle for the final mile.

Italian Lakes

Como, Garda, Maggiore, Iseo. Apartment-block deliveries dominate; lift access varies. Higher proportion of professional-retirement moves than the Tuscan rural pattern.

Le Marche

Ascoli Piceno, Macerata, Fermo, the Apennine villages. Quieter than Tuscany; established Anglo-Italian expat micro-communities. Older property stock and rural-lane access — smaller transfer vehicle the norm.

Puglia

Lecce, Ostuni, the Itria valley masserie, Polignano a Mare. Newer Anglo-Italian pattern; creative-sector restoration projects. The longer onward leg from the entry port adds transit time honestly stated in the quote.

Milan / Lombardy

Fashion, finance, design, manufacturing. Eixample-style apartment block access common; the Navigli and Brera districts often need the smaller transfer vehicle. Smaller-load professional moves dominate.

Rome

Diplomatic, academic, cultural sector, Vatican-adjacent moves. Trastevere and Centro Storico restrict large-vehicle access strictly; the smaller transfer vehicle is the default. Family-home stock outside the historical centre is more straightforward.

Customs path

End to end.
No surprises at the border.

Italy is inside the EU customs union. We file the UK export declaration before departure and the Italian import declaration at the entry port (Ventimiglia from the French Riviera approach, or via Switzerland and the Brenner Pass for lakes and northern destinations). Transfer-of-residence relief is filed against your residenza registration at the destination comune. The standard six-month possession rule applies. You provide passport, residenza confirmation, and a signed inventory. The Italian codice fiscale (tax code) isn't needed for the customs filing but you'll want one for utilities, rental contracts, and property purchases.

Pre-survey checklist

Three things
to flag at survey.

  1. No.01 Whether the destination is rural Tuscan / Marche / Umbrian (narrow lanes, restoration-property access) or urban (Milan, Rome, lakes apartments) — the final-mile transfer vehicle and the schedule shape differ materially.
  2. No.02 Whether the move includes contents staged for a property still mid-renovation — partial-load consolidation and storage at the Italian end may be needed; we quote both legs explicitly when it applies.
  3. No.03 Whether the Brenner Pass routing or the Ventimiglia routing is preferred — northern destinations usually go via Switzerland and the Brenner; western-coast and Tuscany/Liguria via the French Riviera. Northern routing crosses two customs unions (UK→EU→Switzerland→EU); we handle the paperwork either way but the schedule reflects the route.

Route-specific FAQ

Asked and
answered.

The most-asked questions for the Kent-to-Italy route specifically. Cross-route questions live in the general FAQ on the dedicated FAQ page.

Brenner Pass or Ventimiglia — which routing for Tuscany?
Ventimiglia. The French Riviera approach via the A8 to the Italian border at Ventimiglia is the most direct path to Tuscany, Liguria, and the western-coast destinations. The Brenner Pass routing makes sense for the lakes (Como, Garda) and for Veneto / Friuli destinations where the northern entry shortens the road leg.
Restoration property — can the lorry stage contents while building work finishes?
Yes, with two caveats. We need a destination address that can take a partial load (a barn, an outbuilding, a secured area) — we don't leave contents on a lawn next to scaffolding. And the customs relief application timing matters: the contents have to clear customs into your residency, which means you need the residenza registered before we can file the relief. For mid-renovation cases we sometimes split the move into two legs with storage in between, quoted explicitly.
Are mountain villages with narrow approaches actually deliverable?
Most of them, yes. We assess from photos at the survey stage — the vehicle for the final mile depends on the approach width, the parking situation, and any restricted-traffic-zone (ZTL) timing in the historical centre. The smaller transfer vehicle handles cases the full lorry can't. If a village really can't take any vehicle wider than a Fiat Panda, we say so before booking; that's rare but it does happen.
Bromley sister site for Italy?
Yes. Italy is one of bromleyremovals.uk's five dedicated routes. If you're moving from a Bromley borough address (BR postcodes — Bromley, Beckenham, Orpington, Chislehurst, Penge, West Wickham, Bickley), the brief there is borough-specific. Same crew, same lorry, same fixed-figure quote.
